Countertop Types
Countertops are one of the most important considerations when remodeling a kitchen or building a house. Numerous types of countertops are available, ranging from natural materials to man-made composites. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Natural Stone
-
Natural stone countertops are commonly made from granite, slate, marble, limestone or travertine. The durability and stain-resistance of the countertop depends on the hardness and porosity of the stone.
Engineered Stone
-
Engineered stone countertops consist of pulverized quartz, resin and color pigments. Engineered stone counters are harder, sturdier and less expensive than natural stone countertops.
-
Ceramic Tiles
-
Ceramic tile countertops are versatile, moderately priced and fairly durable. While ceramic tile counters look beautiful, the grout must be cleaned and sealed quite frequently.
Concrete
-
Concrete countertops are inexpensive, practical, durable and versatile. While concrete counters can be periodically sealed to keep them looking new, some owners allow the patina to build up for an aged look.
Solid Surface Countertops
-
Solid surface countertops are durable, germ-resistant and easily cleaned. These countertops come in a wide range of colors, but usually are more expensive than other varieties.
Laminate
-
Laminate countertops are inexpensive and available in a range of patterns, textures and colors. These counters consist of a particleboard or plywood base covered with resin-treated paper.
