Beta Strep Infection

Beta Strep is better known as Group B Strep (GBS). It is commonly found in the human body, particularly in the intestines, rectum and vagina. It rarely causes problems in adults, but can cause infection in newborns.

  1. Types of Infections

    • GBS can cause a severe blood infection called sepsis. It is also the leading cause of meningitis in newborns.

    Transmission

    • Direct contact with the bacteria can cause infection. A mother with GBS can pass the bacteria to her child in the uterus during delivery, particularly vaginal delivery.

    Risk Factors

    • Risk factors include going into labor before 37 weeks, fever during labor and a urinary tract infection with GBS. The risk can also increase if the woman's membrane ruptures more than 18 hours before delivery.

    Symptoms

    • Newborns with infection may have fever, difficulty breathing, seizures, a fast heart rate and fussiness. They may also be limp or stiff and have a poor appetite.

    Treatment

    • Pregnant women are generally tested for GBS before delivery. If the test is positive, intravenous antibiotic therapy during labor is the best way to prevent GBS from spreading to the baby. Antibiotics are also used if the infection occurs after delivery.
