Doppler radar is a way of measuring radio waves from a radar antenna to determine the frequencies of raindrops, hailstones, snowflakes and other objects in the air. This enables meteorologists to detect how fast and what direction weather is moving.

    History

  1. Christian Doppler, an Austrian scientist, discovered how to measure frequency of radar waves in motion and when the same waves come in contact with objects.
  2. Function

  3. When using Doppler radar, scientists can determine damaging or deadly weather conditions in advance so people in affected areas can take safety precautions.
  4. Severe Weather

  5. Doppler radar makes it possible for scientists to look inside a storm to locate tornadoes and to gather information to predict the occurrence of tornadoes and severe storms.
  6. Wind Speed

  7. Wind speeds can be determined using Doppler radar by measuring changes in microwave frequencies. These changes are referred to as Doppler effects.
  8. Time Frame

  9. Weather radar when paired with satellite photography, can provide instant atmospheric details with one snapshot image that spans the entire continent.
  10. Recording Weather History

  11. Continuous, instantaneous recordings of Doppler radar make it possible to know weather history for any given location. This capability can be essential for crime scene investigators and search and rescue organizations.
