Canine Bladder Infection Symptoms

Canines experience similar symptoms to bladder infections as humans do. Your dog will be at an increased risk for bladder stones, so if you suspect your dog has a bladder infection, do not hesitate in making an appointment with the veterinarian.

  1. Urination

    • Soiling in the house or straining is usually a good indication of an infection. The urine may be bloody or cloudy with a foul smell. If your dog is unable to pass urine, seek immediate attention.

    Appetite

    • Your dog may have no appetite and lack energy in conjunction with other symptoms. This is a more serious symptom to be addressed immediately by a veterinarian.

    Vomiting

    • If your dog is vomiting as well as exhibiting any of the other symptoms, seek attention immediately.

    Diagnosis

    • The vet will check the bladder for tenderness or unusual firmness, and take a urine sample. The urine sample will show any abnormalities in pH levels, blood cells, or the existence of bacteria.

    Treatment

    • The vet may give your canine an antibiotic to be given for 14 days. Recurrent infections may be treated with a long-term therapy.
