Requirements to Join the Coast Guard

The United States Coast Guard is a small branch of the military that is concerned with protecting maritime interests. It is considered very selective in accepting new recruits. As of 2009, there were about 42,000 members.

  1. Age

    • You must be 17 to 27 years old for active duty or 17 to 39 for reserve duty. Parental consent is required for 17-year-old recruits.

    Education

    • A high school diploma is required. In rare circumstances, the Coast Guard might accept a GED. You will also need to pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test. As of 2009, a score of 45 or higher is required.

    Citizenship

    • Generally, you must be a U.S. citizen to join. Foreign nationals living in the United States who have obtained a green card can also be accepted. But applicants must be able to read, write and speak English.

    Physical

    • Applicants must be in good health and be able to pass a physical test that includes push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, running and swimming. If you fail the swimming test, you can still be accepted but will need to take additional swim classes.

    • A criminal background and credit check will be performed. A felony conviction will prevent you from being accepted.
