Polymyositis Disease

Polymyositis is a rare condition that leads to chronic muscle inflammation and muscle weakness. If left untreated, the connective tissue disorder can lead to muscle damage. Fortunately, people with polymyositis can regain muscle function and rebuild muscle strength.

  1. Identification

    • Symptoms are rare in the early stages of polymyositis. As the disease progresses, a person will likely notice muscle weakness in his hips, thighs, shoulders and neck. Other symptoms include difficulty swallowing, joint pain and tiredness.

    Risk Factors

    • According the the Mayo Clinic, the cause of polymyositis is unknown. However, doctors believe infections (bacterial and viral) and genetics play a major role in this illness.

    Diagnosis

    • To diagnose polymyositis, a doctor will take a blood sample to check muscle enzyme levels. If levels are higher than normal, the doctor will likely schedule an MRI or do a muscle biopsy to check for the disease.

    Treatment

    • Corticosteroids such as prednisone are commonly prescribed to stop inflammation and to treat polymyositis. Rest and exercise are also imperative. Exercise strengthens weak muscles, and adequate rest combats fatigue.

    Considerations

    • Remission periods are rare but possible with polymyositis. During these periods, symptoms noticeably decline or disappear.
