Persons with disabilities have the right to access the same services and places as anyone else while maintaining dignity, autonomy and self-sufficiency. Provisions must be made when the circumstances surrounding disability make it difficult or impossible for the person to exercise these basic rights.

    Education

  1. American children with disabilities have the right to a free education that accommodates their disability. Children with disabilities have the right to enjoy either a mainstream classroom and teacher, or to enter into special education programs. Colleges that receive federal funding are required to provide services for adults with disabilities and make every reasonable effort to remove obstacles in the educational path.
  2. Employment

  3. People with handicaps are protected from discrimination from employment under title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Potential employers are forbidden to ask the nature of the disability, and can only require a disabled person to take a physical if they require one from all job candidates.
  4. Public Transportation

  5. People with disabilities have the right to utilize public transportation. Buses are required to have wheelchair lifts. Public bus drivers are required to assist people in wheelchairs with loading, securing and unloading the person in the wheelchair.
  6. Health Care

  7. People with disabilities are entitled to health care. Medicaid is available in all states to help people with disabilities regardless of their ability to pay for health care.
  8. Reproductive Rights

  9. People with disabilities have the right to produce a family. Medical professionals cannot infringe upon the reproductive choices of disabled people regardless of the nature of the disability.
