Advanced Technology Used in Mobile Phones

Beyond the simple phone abilities of a cell phone, many new phones incorporate advanced technology.

  1. Advanced Internet Capabilities

    • Cell phones are gaining access to faster speeds then before, with technology such as HSDPA allowing speeds that rival dial-up Internet access.

    • Many smart phones such as the iPhone and Palm Pre allow the installation of add-on software to enable a phone to do more than what the pre-installed programs do.

    Wireless Internet

    • Manufacturers are also allowing cell phones to access the Internet via wireless Internet hotspots.

    • A relatively new technology is visual voicemail, which allows the user to read voicemail and not hear it. Currently, only a few phones boast this ability.

    • Another major technology is Global Positioning System capabilities. Phones are being made to work like a non-phone GPS unit can.
