Pityriasis Rosea Symptoms

Pityriasis rosea is a skin rash commonly seen in children and young adults. It may be caused by a virus. It usually goes away in six to eight weeks and is rarely dangerous.

Early Symptoms

The rash begins on the back, chest or abdomen as a large, scaly raised patch known as the herald patch. This phase can last a few days to a few weeks.

Later Stages

As the rash progresses, the large patch fades and scaly spots appear in the shape resembling a pine tree. Occasionally the spots may extend to the limbs. The rash may be itchy, especially when you are overheated.

Color of the Rash

The color of the rash varies depending on skin tone. On fair skin, it is usually pink to red. On dark skin it may appear dark brown, black or grayish and could leave flat spots after the rash has healed.

Additional Symptoms

Approximately half of all people who suffer from pityriasis rosea experience symptoms similar to an upper respiratory infection. These may include headache, fatigue, stuffy nose, sore throat and coughing.

Treatment

Because the rash typically goes away on its own, treatment focuses on relieving itchiness if present. Steroid creams and oral antihistamines are the most common treatments.
