Explanation of Cricket

Cricket is a sport played by two teams consisting of 11 players each. The basic concept of cricket is similar to baseball. Formal cricket games last anywhere from one afternoon to a few days.

  1. Equipment

    • Cricket requires a cricket ball, bat, player gear and wickets. Cricket balls are traditionally red, although white balls are sometimes used in night games because they are easier to see.

    Field

    • While there is no set size or shape, a cricket field is typically an oval ranging in size from 100 to 160 yards. The field must be marked by obvious boundaries, such as a fence.

    Runs

    • After the striker batter has hit the ball, both he and the non-striker batter try to score by running a path out and back to their starting locations. They make one score for running out and another score for returning.

    Outs

    • The fielding team, called the bowling team, tries to get the batter out by catching the ball or hitting the stumps. If the batter misses the ball and it breaks the wicket, then the batter is automatically out.

    Umpires

    • Two umpires officiate a cricket match. One stands behind the non-striker's wicket, while the other stands to one side of the striking batter.

    Variations

    • Indoor cricket, Kwik cricket, beach cricket and French cricket are all popular variations of the traditional cricket sport.
