Flea & Tick Home Remedies

Pet owners concerned about over-the-counter and prescription flea remedies can use these all-natural remedies to keep cats, dogs and homes free of fleas.

  1. Boric Acid

    • When fleas eat boric acid (Borax) they to dehydrate and die. It is a powdery natural substance for use in the home but usage guidelines should be strictly followed as it can cause respiratory distress.

    Diatomaceous Earth

    • Food-grade diatomaceous earth is safe to sprinkle around the home on pet bedding and carpets to kill adult fleas. It is also a powdery natural substance and should still be handled with care.

    Brewer's Yeast

    • Writing for Mother Earth News, Christine Makowski, a New York veterinarian, recommends brewers yeast for dogs and cats. Add brewers yeast as a supplement to their food by adding one teaspoon a day for pets under 50 pounds and one tablespoon a day for pets over 50 pounds.

    Garlic and Vinegar

    • Dogs may also have their diet supplemented, according to Makowski, with one to three cloves of crushed garlic daily. Cidervinegar.org recommends one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar added to a pets drinking water on a daily basis.

    Flea Collars

    • Homemade flea collars can be made by using an absorbent nylon collar with one to two drops of rosemary and/or citronella essential oils per week.

    Beneficial Nematodes

    • For outside treatments, beneficial flea nematodes kill flea eggs and pupae found in the soil--breaking the breeding cycle.
