Teaching English in Japan Requirements
You will need a bachelor's degree, a passport, and good language skills to teach English in Japan. Other requirements may depend on the type of position and school to which you apply.

Other requirements include being a native English speaker. Most English teachers in Japan do not require TEFL certification or prior teaching experience.
English Conversation Schools

To teach at an English conversation school in Japan, you must also hold a four-year university degree in any field. English teachers with "working holiday" visas may not be required to have a four-year degree.

Japan Exchange and Teaching

According to the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme's General Information Handbook, to work as a JET you must be a native English speaker and possess good language skills, hold a four-year university degree in any field, be under the age of 40 (exceptions are possible), not have participated in the JET program since 1998, and not have lived in Japan for three or more years since 2000.
Colleges and Universities

To teach English at a college or university in Japan, you must have at least a master's degree in foreign language teaching and prior teaching experience. However a Ph.D. with TEFL, TESL, SLS or CELTA certification is now strongly preferred. Most schools also require applicants to have published works in foreign language teaching.
Other English Teaching Opportunities

Demand for English teachers in Japan is high, although the number of full-time positions has decreased in recent years. There are a variety of other English teaching positions available, including teaching business English at companies and working at "juku" or cram schools. Most of these positions have the same minimal requirements as an English conversation school.
