Flaxseed & Weight Loss

Much has been written and explored about the benefits of flaxseed. There is some evidence that it reduces the risk of cancer, heart disease, cancer and stroke. Some people are attracted to flaxseed for another one of its benefits. Flaxseed is also used for its weight management and weight-loss benefits.

  1. Fiber

    • Flaxseed is extremely high in fiber. Fiber is essential in weight loss as it creates a feeling of fullness and prevents constipation. Fiber is absorbed slower in the body so it helps a person feel full for a longer period of time.

    Good Fat

    • Flaxseed contains the good fat: polyunsaturated fat. Every person needs some fat in their diet and the fat found in flaxseed helps the body run well and feel sated without the harmful effects that saturated fats pass on such as clogged arteries, heart disease and diabetes.

    Fuel

    • The amount and the kind of fat found in flaxseed acts like fuel and it jump-starts the metabolism. It helps burn calories and encourages the metabolic system to work efficiently.

    Prostaglandins

    • Flaxseed oil contains two essential fatty acids: omega 3 and omega 6. These two acids, when combined, produce prostaglandins that promote weight loss.

    Types

    • Flaxseed can be taken in liquid or capsule form as a supplement. It is also available ground and can be tossed in salads, soups, cereals and sauces.

    Considerations

    • The McKinley Health Center in Illinois recognizes that more studies need to done on flaxseed to substantiate its myriad health claims. The studies are promising, and flaxseed's potential for weight loss and fighting diseases merits more research.
