Ulcers & Diet

An ulcer is an open sore in the stomach, duodenum or esophagus that is caused by a bacterial infection. People with ulcers need to adhere to a specific diet because certain foods can worsen their condition.

  1. Meals

    • People with ulcers should eat three small meals and three snacks throughout the day instead of larger meals. This helps to avoid overeating or feelings of hunger. Do not eat less than 3 hours before bedtime to avoid gastric acid secretions.

    Spicy Foods

    • Although spicy foods are no longer considered the cause of peptic ulcers, they are detrimental to people with ulcers. Chili pepper, red peppers and other spicy peppers can cause burning stomach pain and gas.

    Other Foods to Avoid

    • People with peptic ulcers should also reduce or eliminate foods and beverages with caffeine, citrus, tomato, fatty foods and chocolate from their diets because they can cause abdominal pain, gas and other issues.

    Foods to Include

    • Eat foods that are high in protein with every meal to relieve stomach discomfort. This includes foods such as milk, meat, eggs or cheese. Some other foods you should include in one or more meals are oatmeal, toast, fish, soup, salad, peaches, mashed potatoes, bananas, apple juice, cabbage, pudding and/or bread.

    Other Tips

    • Chew and swallow food slowly to allow your body more time to digest it. Stop smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol and avoid taking aspirin, especially nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil and Motrin.
