What Can You Do With an MPA Degree?

MPA stands for Master of Public Administration. This degree is earned after a bachelor's degree. Because of the wide range of applications of an MPA, students with almost any bachelor's degree can benefit. Some of the topics addressed in an MPA course of study are administration, organization, analysis of public policy, budgeting and ethical considerations of public management.

City Manager

City managers oversee the daily functions of a community. They determine which programs will best suit the community and monitor and assess the results.

Policy Analyst

Policy analysts often work for lobbying groups who have an interest in determining the best legislation for their constituents. For example, the realtors association may want to know how best to increase home ownership.

Business Manager

The managerial skills learned in the program are not limited to the government sector. Businesses need organizational leadership and an MPA prepares students with those skills.

Association Executives

Association executives are managerial positions for various trade organizations. In addition to doing policy work, they oversee the trade organization's daily functions.

Hospital Management

Some MPA degrees have a specialization in health care management that allows graduates to be prepared to run the day-to-day operations of a hospital. These include organizing staff schedules, increasing hospital publicity and making sure supplies are well stocked.
