What Are the Treatments for Cystic Nodular Acne?

Cystic nodular acne is a severe form of acne that results in large lesions or cysts that may not respond to topical or over-the-counter acne medication. Cystic nodular acne should be evaluated by a dermatologist to determine the best treatment for each individual.

Isotretinoin

Isotretinoin is a retinoid that reduces oil production and inflammation. Isotretinoin is taken orally for several weeks or months until the acne has cleared.

Corticosteroids

Corticosteroid injections may be prescribed to treat cystic acne. The solution is injected directly into a cyst to lessen inflammation, promote healing and lessen the chances of developing scars.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics may be prescribed to treat acne-causing bacteria. The antibiotics are taken orally and are usually used in conjunction with other acne fighting drugs such as retinoid treatments.

Excision

For large or persistent cysts that don't respond to medication, a doctor may drain or remove the cysts to unblock the follicle or pore and promote healing. This procedure is done in a physician or dermatologist's office.

Home Care

Individuals suffering with cystic nodular acne should wash twice daily with a mild antibacterial soap and avoid harsh scrubbing. Cysts should not be drained at home, as this may worsen acne and cause scarring.
