What Are the Treatments for Cystic Nodular Acne?

Cystic nodular acne is a severe form of acne that results in large lesions or cysts that may not respond to topical or over-the-counter acne medication. Cystic nodular acne should be evaluated by a dermatologist to determine the best treatment for each individual.

  1. Isotretinoin

    • Isotretinoin is a retinoid that reduces oil production and inflammation. Isotretinoin is taken orally for several weeks or months until the acne has cleared.

    Corticosteroids

    • Corticosteroid injections may be prescribed to treat cystic acne. The solution is injected directly into a cyst to lessen inflammation, promote healing and lessen the chances of developing scars.

    Antibiotics

    • Antibiotics may be prescribed to treat acne-causing bacteria. The antibiotics are taken orally and are usually used in conjunction with other acne fighting drugs such as retinoid treatments.

    Excision

    • For large or persistent cysts that don't respond to medication, a doctor may drain or remove the cysts to unblock the follicle or pore and promote healing. This procedure is done in a physician or dermatologist's office.

    Home Care

    • Individuals suffering with cystic nodular acne should wash twice daily with a mild antibacterial soap and avoid harsh scrubbing. Cysts should not be drained at home, as this may worsen acne and cause scarring.
