Reasons to Eat Fruits & Vegetables
Imagine there was a medicine that could reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, lower high blood pressure, prevent vision and digestive-system problems, and possibly lower the risk of cancer. There is no one medicine that can do all that--but according to the Harvard School of Public Health, you can get all of those health benefits just by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables.
-
Reduce Risk of Heart Disease and Stroke
-
People who eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day will have about a 20 percent lower risk of heart disease and strokes, compared to people who eat less than three servings a day.
Lower High Blood Pressure
-
Eating a healthy low-fat diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables can be as effective as some medications in reducing high blood pressure.
-
May Reduce the Risk of Cancer
-
While the research is not yet conclusive, some fruits and vegetables may protect against some kinds of cancers. For example, fruit may provide protection against lung cancer; leafy green vegetables against mouth, throat and stomach cancer; and tomatoes against prostate cancer.
Prevent Digestive Problems
-
Fruits and vegetables contain indigestible fiber, which promotes good digestion and regularity, and may help prevent diverticulosis.
Prevent Vision Problems
-
Eating fruits and vegetables can help prevent macular degeneration and cataracts by getting rid of free radicals, which are harmful to eyes. Also, the vitamin A in carrots can help night vision.
