Who Gives the Wedding Toasts?

A heartfelt wedding toast (or five) can be one of the most memorable parts of a reception. Here's who might be called upon to raise a glass in the bride and groom's honor.

Best Man

At some weddings, he's the only one to give a little speech honoring the bride and groom. Often, his toast will veer toward the side of roast, as he pokes a little fun at his best friend.

Maid of Honor

Like the best man, the maid of honor can be called upon to deliver a short speech to honor the newlyweds. In some instances, this speech may be given at the rehearsal dinner instead.

Father of the Bride

Often, if there's more than one toast, the father of the bride (as the traditional host of the event) may welcome guests to the wedding, welcome the groom into his family, and talk about his love for his daughter.

Bride and/or Groom

The bride and groom may decide to raise a glass to their guests and to each other. If one member of the couple does decide to give a toast, the other should speak as well.

Other Special People

Anyone can come up and offer a few words of congratulations and well wishes to the couple if they choose.
