Types of Cake Pans

Cake batter can be baked in any cake pan, but using the correct cake pan makes a difference in how well a cake turns out. Specific types of cakes require specific cake pans that go beyond the basic round- or square-cake shape. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Common Pans

    • Round pans

Common pans include the circle, square and rectangle shapes. The rectangle and square are better suited for baking brownies or bar cookies, although cakes can be baked in them. These pans aren't ideal for cakes, because the cake will be higher in the center, resulting in uneven baking. Round pans are used to make two-layer round cakes.

    Bundt Pans

    • Bundt pan

Bundt pans were originally called bund pans. This was changed during World War II to Bundt to avoid any reference to the group called Bunds that supported Hitler. The Bundt pan creates the Bundt cake; a ring-shaped cake with grooves on the side.

    Novelty Pans

    • Novelty pan

These cake pans include basic shapes such as hearts or other shapes that are associated with holidays. They merely shape the cake without any other details. There are also very intricately shaped novelty cake pans; for example, castle shapes that add more detail to the cake while baking. Novelty cake pans are used for special occasion cakes.

    Angel Food

    • Angel food cake pan

This pan consists of an outer circular pan and a tube that fits in the center. The cake pan gets its name from being the only pan specifically for baking an angel food cake. The sides of the pan are designed for the cake to bake high enough to form the shape of the traditional angel food cake.

    Springform Pan

    • Springform cake pan

Springform pans have several parts that are held together with a clamp while the cake bakes. Afterward, the clamp is opened to allow the cake to release without needing to turn it upside down like other cake pans. These pans are used to bake cheesecakes or mousse cakes.
