- Fluid balance is most important when controlling diarrhea. Drink plenty of clear fluids, such as water and electrolyte replacement drinks, to rehydrate the body after periods of diarrhea.
- Avoid the use of sugary drinks while suffering from diarrhea. Strong tea and blackberry brandy are therapeutic treatments for diarrhea.
- Following the BRAT diet is common for acute diarrhea. The diet consists of primarily eating bananas, rice, peeled apples and toast.
- Avoid foods high in fiber. The fiber increases the frequency and amount of stool produced. Avoid whole grains, nuts and raw fruits and vegetables, except peeled apples and bananas.
- Keep the diet strictly to bland foods until the diarrhea is gone. Avoid eating sweet or spicy items.
