Diarrhea is the change in bowel habits normally marked by frequent loose stool. Several different conditions cause diarrhea. Diet, infections and medications are all possible causes of diarrhea. Diet plays an important role in controlling diarrhea.

    Fluids

  1. Fluid balance is most important when controlling diarrhea. Drink plenty of clear fluids, such as water and electrolyte replacement drinks, to rehydrate the body after periods of diarrhea.
  2. Additional Drinks

  3. Avoid the use of sugary drinks while suffering from diarrhea. Strong tea and blackberry brandy are therapeutic treatments for diarrhea.
  4. BRAT Diet

  5. Following the BRAT diet is common for acute diarrhea. The diet consists of primarily eating bananas, rice, peeled apples and toast.
  6. High Fiber

  7. Avoid foods high in fiber. The fiber increases the frequency and amount of stool produced. Avoid whole grains, nuts and raw fruits and vegetables, except peeled apples and bananas.
  8. Bland Foods

  9. Keep the diet strictly to bland foods until the diarrhea is gone. Avoid eating sweet or spicy items.
