What Does HIPPA Stand For?

HIPPA is a privacy act that was created in 1996 by Congress; its sole purpose is to protect individuals and their medical privacy. Before this act went into effect, privacy was much more of a concern for consumers.

    • HIPPA stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Although created in 1996, it officially went into effect in 2003.

    Covered Entities

    • Certain companies must follow HIPPA privacy laws, including most health insurance companies and most providers that do business electronically, such as doctors and dentists.

    Information Protected

    • The information protected by HIPPA is the data entered into your medical record as well as any doctor's notes in your file. Also protected is your billing information and insurance information.

    Rights

    • Under HIPPA, an individual has the right to obtain a copy of his medical records, give permission to have his medical information used, and correct any information that may be in his medical records.

    Shared Information

    • HIPPA states that a patient's information can be shared when required by police, when it is necessary for public health, or if permission is given for family or friends to view the information.
