Cough Medicines That Are Safe During Pregnancy

Many pregnant women experience coughing at some point during their pregnancy. This can be caused by a simple cold, a sore throat or for no apparent reason at all. Several safe medications are available that a pregnant woman can take to relieve coughing.

Cough Drops

Cough drops are available in hard candy form. Medication is released through sucking on the drop. Cough drops are safe to consume during pregnancy, as long as the package directions are followed.

Dextromethorphan

Pregnant women can find coughing relief in medications that contain dextromethorphan. These medications include Robitussin and Vicks 44.

Guaifenesin

Medications that contain guaifenesin are safe to take to relieve coughing during pregnancy. Hytuss and Mucinex both contain guaifenesin.

Guaifenesin & Dextromethorphan

Guaifenesin plus dextromethorphan medications include Benylin Expectorant, Robitussin DM and Vicks 44E. These are all safe to consume during pregnancy to relieve coughing.

Vicks VapoRub

Vicks VapoRub is a medication that is applied to the chest to relieve coughing and congestion. Camphor is its main active ingredient, and it is safe for pregnant women to use.
