What Does One Need to Join the Military?

Many students decide to join the Military after graduating from high school. This can be an exciting time for them as they prepare to get hands-on training in many fields not offered to civilians. There are a number of things a candidate must do in order to be considered for acceptance into the Military.

  1. Age

    • According to Today's Military, most branches of the military require a candidate to be at least 17 years old in order to be accepted; however, there is also a maximum age of 35. One exception is the Navy Reserve, which requires a candidate to between 21 and 35.

    Physical Exam

    • A person needs to be in good physical condition, be height/weight proportionate and be able to pass a physical, including a drug test.

    Citizenship

    • People who are not citizens of the United States may join the military, but they cannot re-enlist until they have become naturalized citizens. Waivers may be required in order for citizens of hostile countries to enlist.

    Education

    • A candidate should have a high school diploma before trying to enter any branch of the military. Those who have at least a high school diploma will have better opportunities; however, in some cases, a GED may be accepted.

    ASVAB

    • The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery or ASVAB is a test to help determine what areas the candidate will excel in. This test must be passed before acceptance into the military.
