Celery for Dieting

While the fiber content of celery is sometimes over-exaggerated, it is still an excellent healthy food that provides many benefits beyond simple weight loss.

  1. Vitamins and Nutrients

    • Celery is packed full of good vitamins and nutrients. These include: vitamins A, C, K, and B6, along with calcium, iron, magnesium and phosphorus.

    Fiber

    • With 2 grams of fiber per serving (approximately 2 medium stalks) celery will fill you up, keep you feeling full and help keep your digestive tract in good shape. These are all good things for keeping healthy and loosing weight.

    Fat and Cholesterol

    • A serving of celery is completely fat and cholesterol free.

    Weight Loss

    • Celery is often recommended in weight loss diets for three main reasons: it has fiber and it lacks sugar and fat. This combo is highly recommended to keep you feeling full without loading up on fat.

    Drawbacks

    • While some sources say that celery has a high sodium content, most agree that this does not overrule the good qualities of celery.
Some sodium in our diets is essential, but too much can lead to hypertension (high blood-pressure) and high cholesterol.
This does not mean to avoid celery if you are watching your sodium intake, but rather to eat it only in moderation.
The only time this nutrient food should be avoided altogether is when you are attempting to gain weight.
