Melatonin Side Effects in Dogs
Melatonin is the active ingredient in the brand name Melatonex. It's usually given to dogs with epilepsy, hyperactivity or severe anxiety problems, such as panicking during thunderstorms. Sometimes it's also given to older dogs with dementia that may be awake all night. This is a human drug that is currently not approved for use in dogs, but many veterinarians prescribe it as an off-label use.

Effects
-
Melatonin most commonly makes a dog drowsy. However, according to Dr. Linda Aronson, writing for Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue, dogs given melatonin for anxiety or phobias often will not go to sleep.
For Female Dogs
-
According to Dr. Nicholas Dodman, writing for Pet Place.com, melatonin has been known to change the time an unspayed female dog comes into heat. The changes can differ from dog to dog.

Warning

Although melatonin is available over the counter for humans, do not give this to dogs. Dr. Dodman explains that human melatonin is far too strong for dogs and can make them sick.
Considerations

In order to be avoid overdosing, you need to know the weight of your dog. You also should discuss the dosage level with your veterinarian and make sure the melatonin won't interfere with other medication the dog may be on.
