What Is the Herb Mullein Used for?

Mullein has been touted as a "natural wonder" herb. The stem and leaves of the larger species are covered with a dense woolly growth with the flowers of the plant forming a spike about 1 foot high. Since mullein contains substances like choline, hesperidin, magnesium, PABA, saponin, sulfur, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D, it has a number of uses.

  1. Battling Illness

    • Mullein has been used as a remedy for asthma, bronchitis and hay fever.

    Clearing Congestion

    • The herb acts as a decongestant that restores free breathing and as an expectorant that loosens a dry, unproductive cough.

    Soothing Action

    • As an emollient, it soothes irritation in the bronchial passages and throat. It also helps to reduce glandular swellings.

    Fighting Insomnia

    • Mullein also acts as a mild sedative that has helped many to overcome sleeplessness.

    Digestive Help

    • Acting as an antispasmodic, mullein can relieve stomach cramps and help control diarrhea. It is also used as a mild laxative.

    Ear Problems

    • Mullein oil has been used by many as a remedy for ear complaints.
