Milky Spore Disease

Milky spore disease might sound like something people want to prevent, but it actually is a beneficial and natural way to control Japanese beetles which do damage to lawns and gardens. By killing the larvae, or grubs, of these beetles, milky spore disease effectively and safely eliminates them. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. The Problem

    • Japanese beetles are destructive in lawns and gardens, as they eat fruit, flowers, shrubs and other plants. The grubs eat grass roots and plant stems.

    Ingredient

    • Milky spore powder contains the bacteria Bacillus popillae. It can be purchased at home and garden shops, as well as online.

    Application

    • The powder should be applied at 10 lbs. per acre, or 4 oz. per 1,000 square feet. Distributors recommend applying it in a checkerboard pattern in rows 4 feet apart on grass, mulched areas and gardens.

    Climate Considerations

    • In warm climates, milky spore disease can become established within a year, while in colder areas it can take up to five years. Milky spore disease kills Japanese beetle larvae for at least 15 years.

    EPA Approval

    • Milky spore disease is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to not harm beneficial insects, birds, pets or humans. It also has no effect on wells, streams or ponds.
