What are the Symptoms of Gout in the Feet?

Gout is a form of arthritis you may develop as a result of too much uric acid in your blood and can affect any joints in your body, especially those in your legs and feet. Unlike chronic forms of arthritis that cause persistent pain, gout often occurs as intermittent flare ups that can be triggered by certain foods and lifestyle habits. Symptoms of gout in your feet include pain and changes in the appearance of your skin.

Time Frame

The symptoms of gout attacks are most likely to occur at night while you are trying to sleep. These attacks are usually more severe at night than during the day.

Swelling

The buildup of uric acid in your joints can cause swelling in your feet that may be mild to severe and can prevent you from wearing socks and shoes.

Redness

You may notice redness beginning on your big toe and spreading through your other toes and foot as a result of gout.

Warmth

Your toes and feet may feel warm to the touch due to gout. You may begin to sweat more and that can promote fungal growth between your toes.

Pain

Gout may cause mild to severe pain, especially in your big toe. It can spread throughout your feet and can be so severe you are not able to bear weight on your foot.

Joint Damage

Gout that is left untreated may cause damage to the joints of your big toe and foot, which can lead to deformities and loss of range of motion.
