Dangers of Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Alpha hydroxy acids are fruit acids commonly found in skin care products and cosmetics. Uses include acne treatment, wrinkle reduction and exfoliation. There are some dangers in using AHAs.

Skin Care Products

Over the counter skin care products are safe to use. People with sensitive skin may have reactions such as redness, swelling and itching. Continued use under these conditions produces long-term damage to the skin.

Skin Peels and Exfoliation

Over the counter products are available for these processes. Dermatologists suggest that licensed professionals administer these treatments to avoid blistering, burning and skin discoloration.

Oral Alpha Hydroxy Acid

Malic acid is a form that is taken orally and has been known to cause stomach irritations such as vomiting, nausea and diarrhea. It is not recommended for pregnant women.

UV Sensitivity

The greatest risk in using alpha hydroxy acids is increased sensitivity to UV light. This increases the chances of severe sunburns. Sunblock is recommended during AHA treatments.

Damage Reversal

UV sensitivity lessens after two weeks of discontinued usage of AHA products. Skin irritations, blemishes, swelling, redness and other adverse reactions subside once you stop using the product containing alpha hydroxy acids. In rare cases, there is permanent damage done because of an allergic reaction.
