Alcoholism is not just a behavior problem; it is a physical and emotional disease that is treatable. The illness has many stages but has one main consistent characteristic: The alcoholic cannot stop at just one drink and therefore many, if not all, aspects of his personal and professional life becomes adversely affected.

  1. Changes in Behavior

    • Many alcoholics experience periods of forgetfulness. These periods can be as simple as forgetting a conversation with a friend or as severe as a complete blackout that lasts for several hours. Other changes in behavior include losing interest in previous activities and ordering their day around their next drink.

    Secretive Behavior

    • Alcoholics often hide their alcohol from their friends, co-workers and family by keeping bottles in strange places. They also might go off alone for extended periods of time.

    Problems at Work

    • Problems with money, work and legal issues often are a characteristic of alcoholic behavior. Because drinking becomes the most important thing in the alcoholic's life, he might not be able to keep up with his bills or job commitments.

    Change in Friends

    • The alcoholic often will seek new friends who share their desire to drink. They frequently will stop seeing old friends because they don't want them to know how much they drink.

    Seeking Help

    • Even if your husband refuses to seek help, you can find support and encouragement by attending an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. These groups are open to people from all walks of life.
