Tests & Signs of Depression

Everyone has those moments where they feel sad. Nevertheless, those moments are fleeting. Usually, we take notice and snap out of our funks. Sometimes, the sadness evolves into something more: depression.

  1. Gloomy Outlook

    • People with depressed tend to develop a dreary outlook on life, feeling hopeless about the present and future. They lose interest or pleasure in doing activities they previously felt were enjoyable.

    Sleep Problems

    • They also develop sleeping problems. Insomnia is one symptom. On the other end of the spectrum, some people with depression oversleep.

    Fatigue

    • Another sign of depression is extreme fatigue. More than normal tiredness, even normal activities turn difficult, taking an enormous amount of energy.

    Other Physical Symptoms

    • Headaches, stomachaches and cramps are other physical symptoms of depression. These aches don't ease with treatment and don't have any other causes.

    Routine Tests

    • Your physician may perform a physical exam, checking weight and performing standard tests like measuring blood pressure and heart rate. Lab tests may also be performed to check blood cells and measure the amount of alcohol or drugs in your system.

    Psychological Tests

    • Your physician may ask a series of questions related to your mood. He will inquire about family history. Then he'll discuss your depression symptoms. Other questions asked will be about history of drug use or history of suicidal thoughts.
