Define Grammar School

Grammar School is a term that has changed in meaning over the past several centuries. While originally referring to a very specific type of educational institution, the term now can refer to all kinds of pre-college schools.

History

Grammar schools traditionally were understood as centers for learning the classics and foreign languages.

Languages

The focus originally rested on the instruction of Latin, although other classical languages, such as Greek, were later taught in the curriculum.

Development

Usage has shifted as grammar schools have developed under different educational systems and governments.

The British System

According to a recent government act, a grammar school in the UK is now classified based on how the attending students are selected.

The United States System

A grammar school in the United States can be any school acting as an intermediate between elementary school and high school, although some elementary schools might be considered grammar schools.
