Define DSL Internet Connection

This article defines a DSL Internet Connection and compares it to other connection types.

  1. DSL defined

    • DSL stands for digital subscriber line. It involves the use of regular phone lines to provide high-speed Internet service. There are several variations of DSL, but each works on the same principle.

    sDSL

    • sDSL (symmetric DSL) is a type of DSL connection that provides the same amount of bandwidth (speed) when downloading information from the Internet as it would uploading information to the Internet.

    aDSL

    • aDSL (Asymmetric DSL) is slightly different from sDSL. Unlike sDSL, aDSL's bandwidth speeds differ. Usually, the download speed is much faster then the upload speed.

    Uses

    • sDSL is often used for business purposes because most business are often uploading as much as they are downloading. The aDSL type is used for residential customers, since most resident consumers are less likely to require fast upload speeds.

    DSL vs Cable

    • DSL uses phone lines to deliver broadband Internet, while Cable uses existing cable lines to deliver the Internet.
