-
Academic Achievement
-
Mostly anecdotal reports state that students who wear school uniforms experience better academic achievement. But no studies have successfully proven this.
Violence
-
No studies have shown that school uniforms reduce school violence. Also, gang signs and clothing can help identify gang members, helping students who are not gang members to avoid violence.
-
Individual Rights
-
Opponents of school uniforms claim national and local governments have no right to force students to wear particular uniforms. and that school uniforms prevent students from expressing their identities through clothing. Some schools have been accused of not encouraging individuality by suspending students for wearing makeup, for example.
Discipline
-
Students who fail wear school uniforms are sometimes disciplined, taking time away from discipline for more serious offenses.
Self-Esteem
-
The style of school uniform might flatter the appearance of some students more than others and could cause some students to have low self-esteem. For example, students who are obese can sometimes hide their condition by wearing particular styles of clothing.
