School Safety Concerns

Schools are meant to be safe havens for children to learn and prepare for their futures. But schools can never be completely safe from violence, contagious diseases and disasters. Still, there are ways to reduce the incidence of these occurrences.

  1. Weapons

    • Students who are bullied or angry about events might decide to bring guns or knives to school for self-defense or revenge. Schools with high incidences of violence can benefit from random searches and metal detectors.

    Fire

    • Schools are enclosed and overcrowded locations. Not only can students get trapped in a classroom during a fire, but panic can lead to trampling, which can injure students. Practicing drills can help students get used to leaving the school in a safe way.

    Gangs

    • Some schools have rival gangs that use violence against one another. Also, drive-by shootings can sometimes occur on campuses.

    Food Safety

    • Because food is stored in large quantities, spoiled food can lead to food poisoning in large numbers of students. Schools can serve food that doesn't spoil easily and use proper sanitation methods.

    Diseases

    • Outbreaks of diseases can spread in the close confines of schools. Parents should not send sick children to school, and schools should be shut down if a dangerous and contagious disease has reached an epidemic status.
