Signs & Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection in Men

Urinary tract infections (UTI) primarily attack females, but males are not excluded. Caused by exposure to E. coli, a UTI presents with sometimes subtle symptoms for males.

Urination Symptoms

A burning sensation during urination is often the first recognized symptom of a UTI. Frequent urination, producing less output than normal for the patient, may also present as an early symptom.

Pain

Discomfort or pain in the back and sides occurs when infection moves into the kidneys. Pelvic pressure or pain may also occur.

Severe Symptoms

Confusion may occur when the infection becomes severe. Fever and nausea my also occur as the infection increases.

Diagnosis

Your doctor may ask for a urinalysis to diagnosis the infection. The urinalysis will check for white blood cells in the urine, a sign of a UTI.

Prevention

The consumption of adequate fluids is helpful in preventing urinary tract infections. Proper care and cleansing of the genital area may help males avoid becoming infected with E. coli.
