Requirements to Become a Detective

The job of a detective involves investigating crimes. Detectives gather facts, interview witnesses and suspects and analyze forensic data in hopes of solving a crime.

High School Diploma

Law enforcement officials, including detectives, are required to have high school diplomas.

Higher Education

Depending on the law enforcement agency, a detective may be required to have a bachelor's degree. Some detectives have degrees in law enforcement or criminal justice.

Experience

In some cases, a degree must be coupled with experience as a police officer or in a government intelligence or military field. Many law enforcement agencies promote officers to detective.

Characteristics

Good detectives should be creative, detail-oriented and thorough. They must understand math, science and political science to a certain degree.

Other Requirements

Most states require a detective to have a license and he cannot be a convicted felon. If a detective works for a private firm, he may have to adhere to specific training requirements.
