Common Uses of Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is an essential oil used for its antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties by trained aromatherapists and the layperson alike. It blends well with other essential oils and can be used in a variety of ways.

Background

Derived from the Australian Melaleuca alternifolia tree, the oil has been used by Aborigines for centuries.

For the Home

Tea tree oil's antiseptic properties makes it invaluable in the home for cleaning purposes. Tea tree oil can be added to homemade all-purpose cleansers to eliminate germs on counter tops, sinks and other surfaces.

Insect Repellent

Tea tree oil may be mixed into a base oil such as grapeseed and then blended with other essential oils such as thyme and lemongrass. The oil is applied to the skin to repel insects.

Minor Wound Care

For small cuts and abrasions, tea tree oil is useful in speeding the healing process due to it's antiseptic and antibacterial properties.

Candida and Other Fungal Infections

Therapeutic use of tea tree oil is reputed to help rid the body of candida, athlete's foot and ringworm.
