Types of Allergies & Symptoms

An allergy is when the immune system believes something is trying to harm the body, and tries to resist it. There are many types of allergies, from foods to animals.

  1. Airborne

    • Environmental allergies are the most common, according to KidsHealth.org. These mainly cause symptoms like itchy eyes, a runny nose and a sore throat. Most people are allergic to mold, pet dander and pollen.

    Food

    • Food allergies are common in infants, and sometimes decrease as people age. Food allergies can be serious, causing the throat to swell, or can simply be bothersome, like a rash or diarrhea. Foods that cause most allergies are dairy products, nuts and seafood.

    Medicines

    • The most common type of medication allergies are related to antibiotics. Many times these cause a rash, an extreme case of hives or swelling. According to the Mayo Clinic, drug allergies are uncommon and unpredictable.

    Chemicals

    • Mostly, allergic reactions to chemicals appear as hives on a person. The most likely chemicals for a person to react to are laundry detergents, household cleaners and cosmetics.

    Avoidance

    • When diagnosed with allergies, people can evade certain things. Pets may be kept outdoor, mowing the lawn may become someone else's priority during pollen season, and certain foods or restaurants may be avoided.
