Medications Used to Treat Pediatric Bipolar Disorder

Pediatric bipolar disorder is a condition that can affect a child's functioning in social relationships, school performance and at home with the family. There are few drugs that are officially indicated for pediatric bipolar disorder. Child psychiatrists that see patients with bipolar disorder have practice and expertise in using many of the medications indicated for adults with children. This issue should be discussed with parents during the child's doctor's appointment.

Anticonvulsants

Using medications, such as valproic acid or carbamazepine, can be effective. These medications are indicated for seizure disorders and bipolar disorder. These medications do require close monitoring by a physician and periodic lab work to ensure that the medication is at an appropriate level in the bloodstream.

Other Mood Stabilizers

Using other types of mood stabilizers, such as lithium or gabapentin, are also prescribed for pediatric bipolar disorder. These medications work well to stabilize mood and prevent symptoms from recurring.

Traditional Antipsychotics

Using a traditional antipsychotics, such as chlorpromazine or molindone, to stabilize acute symptoms of agitation, aggression or psychosis can work with children. However, this should be done with caution and only when symptoms are severe.

Atypical Antipsychotics

Using atypical antipsychotic medications, such as risperidone or olanzapine, is more common than use of traditional antipsychotics in children. The side effect profile of atypical antipsychotics is less than that of the older, more traditional, medications. Atypicals can be used in combination with other medications to boost the effects.

Other Medications

Taking an anti-anxiety medication, such as buspirone, is also an option for pediatric bipolar disorder patients. These types of medications help to calm the agitation or aggression that can be part of mania. Central alpha-agonists, such as clonidine and guanfacine, are also commonly used in children.
