Guide to Sewing Needles

Sewing needles are made today for a multitude of tasks. Use the proper needle for the job even if only replacing a missing button on a garment so your project will be completed in less time and with better results.

  1. Basic Needles

    • There are four basic types of hand sewing needles. Darners, sharps, betweens and embroidery needles are the most commonly used sewing needles.

    Specialty Needles

    • Household repair needle kits contain curved sewing needles for upholstery work. Sturdy needles are made in shapes and sizes to work on leather, carpet and even canvas tenting fabric.

    Composition

    • Modern sewing needles are often made from 70 percent recycled materials.

    Number Sizes

    • Each type of sewing needle has a range of different sizes. A finer needle will always have a higher number.

    Size to Fabric

    • Choose a hand sewing needle correctly sized for the type and weight of fabric. Use size 9 needles with more lightweight fabrics and a size 8 needle for medium-weight fabrics.
