Symptoms of Kidney Failure in Dogs

Symptoms of kidney failure in dogs can take time to become noticeable. The early symptoms may not raise significant alarm, while a combination of the clinical symptoms will present an advanced problem. Kidney failure is treatable but not irreversible.

  1. Early Symptoms

    • Early symptoms of kidney failure in dogs can include an increase in water consumption and urination. Other symptoms can include weakness, intolerance or inability to exercise normally, and tiring easily.

    Clinical Symptoms

    • Some of the more serious signs include depression and/or loss of appetite. Physical signs include vomiting, serious bad breath, diarrhea, and ulcers in the mouth.

    Cause

    • Symptoms of kidney failure in dogs usually show after seventy-five percent of the kidney is affected. Kidney failure can be a common problem for older dogs whose bodies are slowly breaking down.

    Prevalence

    • Kidney failure normally shows symptoms from seven to ten years of age. Breeds most affected include Beagles, Terriers, Dobermans, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Cocker Spaniels, Poodles, Shar Peis, and Shih Tzus.

    Treatment

    • Medications and dietary changes given at home can help lessen the effects of chronic kidney failure. More progressed stages can merit treatments of special food, injections under the skin and regular veterinarian visits, but can develop to a point of hospitalization and intravenous care.
