- The most common symptom of a hip problem is a change in your dog's walk. This may also be apparent during running or other exercises. Additional symptoms include stiffness, pain in the hind legs, limping or even a complete unwillingness to move.
- Hip dysplasia is a genetic disease in which an unusual amount of wear occurs at the hip joints. Due to the excessive wear to the joint, arthritis often occurs alongside mild to severe joint pain.
- Arthritis may occur alongside hip dysplasia. Dogs who are suffering from arthritis of the hips may have difficulty sitting or standing, accompanied by weight gain, change in sleeping habits as well as less interest in normal activities.
- Osteochondrosis usually occurs in larger breeds of dogs. This disease affects the cartilage of the joints. The cartilage has been damaged in some way and does not properly protect the bones, causing pain, or cracking of the cartilage or bones.
- The severity of each condition will determine what is best for your dog. Surgery can range from realigning the bones or hip replacement. For some dogs, pain medication may be the only option, such as with arthritis.
