Types of Angiosperm Flowers

All plants that produce flowers are angiosperms, the most common plant form on Earth. Angiosperms use the flower for reproduction, and their blooms can be typed according to the role the flowers play in reproduction as well as the number and kinds of parts they have. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Complete Flowers

    • Flowers that are complete have four parts, which are--moving from the outside to the center of the flower--sepals, petals, stamen and carpels, which can be joined together to form a pistil. A tulip is a complete flower.

    Incomplete Flowers

    • Incomplete flowers are missing one or more parts that a complete flower possesses.

    Perfect Flowers

    • A perfect flower like the buttercup has everything it needs to produce seeds--that is, it has both male and female parts.

    Monoecious Flowers

    • A monoecious angiosperm plant produces male and female flowers on the same plant. The flowers are also called imperfect flowers because each one does not contain both male and female reproductive parts.

    Dioecious Flowers

    • A dioecious plant blooms with either all female flowers or all male flowers. This being the case, dioecious angiosperms also produce imperfect flowers.
