Imodium Dose for Dogs
Imodium can be administered to a dog for treatment of diarrhea following suggested doses in caplet or liquid form.

Types

Imodium is an anti-diarrheal drug. Its generic name is Loperamide. Loperamide is also sold over the counter under the brand names Imodium AD, Pepto Diarrhea Control and Kaopectate II Caplets.
Dosage

The dose for Imodium in tablet form is generally 1 mg per 20 lbs. every eight hours. The dog dose for Imodium in liquid form is 1 ml per 1 lb. every eight hours.

Effects

Imodium relieves diarrhea in dogs, but it does not resolve the cause of diarrhea. Imodium administered to a dog might cause bloat, lethargy or constipation.

It is not unusual for "human" drugs to be recommended for dogs. Veterinarians often give Imodium to dogs for treatment of diarrhea.
Warning

Consult your veterinarian before giving a dog any over-the-counter medication. If diarrhea persists for more than 48 hours, seek medical attention for your dog. Treatment for diarrhea includes determining the underlying cause and monitoring food and liquids.

How old is your Shih Tzu? I am having the same problem with mine. She is almost 12. How long before you noticed a difference?

About 2 weeks ago I noticed my little Shih Tzu had a serious runny stool problem (diarrhoea). He weighs only 11 lbs. and I decided to give him only half of my immodium D and see if it made a noticeable difference. By the grace of God his diarrhoea went away. I had a lucky guesstimate as to the dosage. Next day I did called my Vet and told him what I did and he said "Well James, next I need Life Insurnce I will figure out how much I need, myself and apply directly with the company without your help". He was chuckling at the end of the line and said I was lucky the problem with my dog wasn't more serious.

Addition to my post. I use Pill Pockets to give my pets medication. It makes life for both of us so much better. They have both Chicken and Beef. My dogs like Chicken.

I discuss every drug I give to my dog with my Vet prior to giving it to her. Dogs can take IMODIUM at 1 mg per 20 lbs. If my dog does not get better after 2 doses, I talk/take her in to the Vet. Don't wait 3 days of your dog being sick before you talk to your Vet.

This is good but I found there to be a huge discrepency in the liquid dosage (4 x more here) compared to what my Vet recommended....REad your label which willgive you the specific drug's conversion rate from mg to mL. My dose was only 5mL to 1 mg and my dog is only 20#s. Above says 1mL per Lb. or 20mL BIG Difference!
