Like other food allergies, strawberry allergies can cause mildly uncomfortable symptoms in some people and life-threatening reactions in others. Signs of strawberry allergies range from mild itching to anaphylactic seizures.

    Common Symptoms

  1. Common symptoms include hives, trouble breathing, itching of the mouth, dizziness, and swelling of the throat or other parts of the body.
  2. Severe Symptoms

  3. Strawberry allergies can cause a life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis, which requires emergency medical treatment. Signs of anaphylactic shock include a rapid pulse, loss of consciousness, lightheadedness and trouble breathing.
  4. Considerations

  5. The allergen in strawberries is similar to that of birch pollen. If you are allergic to birch pollen, your strawberry allergy symptoms could be caused by Oral Allergy Syndrome, a condition related to pollen allergies.
  6. Treatment

  7. There is no known cure for strawberry allergies, although over-the-counter and prescribed antihistamines can treat mild symptoms. Severe cases require an injection of epinephrine and emergency medical treatment.
  8. Prevention

  9. The best way to prevent strawberry allergies is to avoid eating strawberries and all foods that use strawberries as an ingredient.
