Snowshoes have been used for thousands of years and have evolved over time. Each part of the snowshoe has a specific purpose and helps you maintain your balance and traction in snowy environments.

    Frame

  1. This part of the snowshoe is the base of the shoe and is made out of wood or metal. It supports the weight of the wearer and forms the basic shape of the shoe.
  2. Decking

  3. Usually made out of a webbed material, the decking is stretched across the frame and keeps your feet above the snow.
  4. Crampons

  5. Crampons are attached to the bottom of each shoe and are used for traction while walking on ice. The crampon sticks into the ice and prevents you from slipping. Crampons are usually made from iron.
  6. Bindings

  7. The bindings are the straps on your snowshoe that connect the snowshoe to your boot. The bindings are attached to the snowshoe and strapped around the boot.
  8. Toe Bar

  9. This part is exactly what it sounds like. It is a bar (made of a sturdy material that varies by manufacturer) that supports the weight of the toes.
