Definition of a Landscape Architect

A landscape architect designs the areas around buildings, in parks and natural areas.

  1. Tasks

    • Landscape architects consider the location of a project in relation to existing roads, walkways and buildings. They analyze the amount of sun the area receives, soil type, drainage and terrain levels. Next they draw a detailed plan of the area using a computer-aided design system and a geographic information system. The plan shows existing features, as well as planned improvements and plantings.

    Projects

    • Landscape architects create designs for residential lawns and yards, areas around business buildings, parks, recreational areas, historical areas and along highways.

    Clients

    • Landscape architects work for residential and business owners, municipal and regional authorities, and government bodies. They use reports, photographs, sketches and models to present their design ideas to the client. When the client approves the design, the landscape architect draws up a list of materials needed and supervises the construction and planting needed to implement the plan.

    Associates

    • Architects work with building architects, surveyors and engineers. They may also work with foresters or environmental scientists when working on a restoration plan for natural areas.
