What Is Internet Explorer 7?

Windows Internet Explorer 7 was a major upgrade from previous versions of Internet Explorer. Microsoft, the makers of Windows Internet Explorer, had not released a new version since 2001.

  1. History

    • The first version of Internet Explorer was released in 1995. While six versions were released between 1995 and 2001 very little in terms of functionality had really changed during that time. However, with the rise of Mozilla's Firefox as a challenger in the browser market, Microsoft decided it was time to do an upgrade.

    Features

    • Many new features now available in Internet Explorer 7 had not been available in previous versions. A major new feature of the browser is that it has tabbed browsing, much like competing browsers Opera and Mozilla Firefox. Other changes included were much stronger encryption, a phishing filter and better support for modern Web programming.

    Availability

    • Internet Explorer 7 is only available on the Windows operating system by Microsoft. Linux and Macintosh do not have Internet Explorer available to them. Internet Explorer 7 can be downloaded from Microsoft for free.

    Market Share

    • According to hitslink.com, Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 controls 23.09% of the market. All versions of Internet Explorer combined represent 62.76% of the market.

    Internet Explorer 8

    • In March of 2009 Microsoft upgraded the browser yet again with Internet Explorer 8. Much like Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 8 is a free browser that you can download from Microsoft directly.
