Kokeshi dolls are traditional crafts made by woodworkers in Japan. These little dolls are made from a single piece of wood, decorated and sold to visitors in the area.

    • Kokeshi dolls have an unknown origin. The dolls are thought to date as far back as the early 19th century when woodworkers made them to sell as toy souvenirs.

    Types

    • There are 11 types of Kokeshi dolls. The types of shapes and designs featured on a Kokeshi doll point to the area of Japan where it was produced. The most common Kokeshi doll is the Naruko made in the Miyagi Prefecture.

    Geography

    • The Kokeshi doll was first produced by woodworkers at Shinchi Shuraku in Zao, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. The technique of making these dolls spread throughout the region and are still popular.

    Materials

    • Many Kokeshi dolls are made from dogwood and cherry. Traditional Kokeshi are produced from the Japanese maple tree, but this type of wood is seasoned outdoors for up to five years before it is used.
